    Bio

Like a master chef blending his favorite spices, singer, songwriter, and producer RayVSoul crafts music that’s as comforting as it is captivating. His signature sound is a rich and unique blend of ’70s funk, soul, and pop rock and ‘80s synth-pop. The result? A groove that feels like home yet takes you somewhere entirely new—retro yet nouveaux, timeless yet innovative. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee—considered the cradle of soul music—RayVSoul’s earliest musical education came from the Black Baptist church, where the music and preaching embodied emotion and authenticity. His father, a Baptist minister, and his mother, an elementary school teacher and librarian, nurtured a home where faith and joy lived side by side. The music of Nat King Cole could often be heard wafting through the house as could that of Mahalia Jackson or opera singer Leontyne Price. Saturday evenings meant sitting with his mother and older brother to watch The Lawrence Welk Show, something that would broaden his musical palette and spark a lifelong appreciation for diverse musical genres. At the age of six, Ray’s mother had him begin piano lessons from a neighborhood piano teacher, whereupon a natural talent for the instrument was discovered. By his teenage years, after having taught himself to play by ear, he started play the organ for local church choirs. Around this same time, he had assembled a funk band with other kids his age that performed at school talent shows. The summer before his sophomore year in high school, he wrote a collection of R&B songs—one of which caught the ear of a local music producer and was nearly recorded by a rising local singer. Along the way, he honed his musicianship playing trumpet in the concert and marching bands in junior and high school, as well as studying composition and orchestration at a local college. Although music was his dream, Ray pursued academics after high school, majoring first in journalism, then marketing, and finally English Literature—where his gift for creative writing flourished. After graduate school, a successful career as a technical writer in the high tech world followed, but music never loosened its grip. From time to time, he dabbled as a cocktail pianist and lounge singer, as well as served as organist and minister of music for various churches. When the pull to create and perform original music became too great, Ray stepped into the recording studio and onto the stage performing with local R&B and Funk bands. From the soulful flavor of Stax artists like Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, the genre-bending funk rock fusion of Sly and the Family Stone, to the synth-pop sophistication of Swing Out Sister, it’s all embedded in the music of RayVSoul. His vocal style carries the grit and soul of Wilson Pickett, the bluesy lyricism of Bobby Womack, and the raw emotional texture of Teddy Pendergrass. Today, RayVSoul embarks on a thrilling new chapter with the release of his debut album, Wanna Live the American Dream. The project, set to be unveiled as a series of singles, is a testament to his lifelong journey—a tapestry of funk, soul, synth-pop and truth, woven together with wisdom, joy, and a deep love for the craft. It’s the sound of an artist who’s lived it all—the joy and the pain. Come go with him on this exciting musical journey.
